New Fashion Event...Fashion on the Pavement at the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market

NEW YORK June 2, 2004 -– Rising from the asphalt July 2004, Fashion on the Pavement, New York’s hottest new fashion abode will be weaving its way to the colorful sidewalks of Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market. A collaboration shaped by fashion authority Vicki Ross, and Chelsea flea market founder Alan Boss, Fashion on the Pavement provides a turf for creative and experimental independent designers to sell original collections right on the street. Combining contradistinctive elements of street chic and couture with a mix of vintage costuming, couturiers committing their designs to the delightful patchwork of eclectic vendors lining the street include local talent Maurice Mallone, leather designer Carla Dawn Behrle evening attire designer Neil Bieff, graffiti artist Mark Lawrence with vintage experts Marilyn Kirschner and BW’s Eagle Eye.

“Fashion on the Pavement brings fashion to the streets—available not only to those in the know, but everyone. It’s an idea whose time has come. Where else should it be but at New York City’s newest and most exciting outdoor experience, Hell's Kitchen Flea Market,” Alan Boss, founder of Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market.

“We are extremely excited to be a part of this new venture. This is a unique way to bring fashion to the public as well as being an opportunity for designers like Maurice to support young and emerging designers. This is quintessential New York,” Bill Kitchen, Director of Marketing Maurice Mallone.

An industry wide venture linking a fashion coterie of industry decision makers including the Council of Fashion Designers of America, The Fashion Center, Fashion Institute of Technology, Center for Professional Studies, Fashion Group International, The Fashion Calendar, Fashion News Workshop, and Roundtable, a percentage of the proceeds each weekend will benefit the charity Bottomless Closet. Women’s, men’s, and children’s ware, accessories, original art and vintage clothing will be sold. Interested designers should contact Rebecca Martin at Fashion on the Pavement by telephone 212. 242. 1213 or via email at rebecca@hellskitchenfleamarket.com.

Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market
Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market, a diamond in the rough & tumble of a neighborhood rich in gritty urban history, resurrected Spring 2004 for an anything but hellish shopping experience. New York’s newest outdoor market harkens back to the legendary Paddy’s Market, a massive outdoor mart that thrived from the 1870’s through the 1930’s at the same location. Blocks from the bright lights and city sites of Times Square, Hell’s Kitchen is no longer a backdrop for the old “Gangs of New York.” Hardly a journey down the River Styx, Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market is bustling with 170 sellers including up-and-coming designers, original art & antiques, collectibles, fresh produce and Farmers Market, jewelry, furniture, and flowers.

Vicki Ross
Manhattan born fashion authority Vicki Ross has been keeping herself busy with those who busy themselves with the design of clothes as a retail consultant for over 30 years. Founder of South of Seventh, a downtown showcase of young and upcoming designer collections, Ross has initiated fashion projects throughout the world devoted to shining a spotlight on young talent helping to jumpstart careers. With a degree in liberal arts Ross says she was “trained to do nothing,” so she combined her stylist’s eye with her city savvy social life and defined herself a “Fashion Detective.” Beginning her career in 1972 by representing a single boutique in Texas she speedily became known as a cutting-edge fashion visionaire. Having helped plan the Fashion Walk of Fame 2001, launched E*Trade New York as a retail space, and introduced cutting edge American fashion designers such a Donna Karen and cosmetic firms Bobbi Brown and Kiehl’s to the Hong Kong market through Joyce Boutique, one of Hong Kong's international famous retailers, Ross has proved herself a top femme de mode. A member of fashion networking groups The Fashion Group International, Fashion News Workshop and Roundtable, Ross continues to devote herself to the pursuits of New York’s fashion industry. Alan Boss
Armed with street smarts, an economics degree from City College, and a pioneering spirit, Bronx-born urbanite Alan Boss has been described by Empire Magazine “A remarkable entrepreneur who built a retail empire without any bricks or nails”. A son of a grocer, Boss cultivated his readiness to experiment with just about anything to make money as long as he didn’t need to wear a suit. From hauling furniture to managing a fruit and vegetable stand, Boss has reinvented himself many times over before trailblazing his career in 1976 one early Sunday with the birth of Annex Flea Market. As Founder and President of the Metropolitan Pavilion, which was awarded Event Site of the Year, one might say that Alan Boss is in the business of filling empty spaces.
