Shri Syed Shahnawaz Hussain gives away awards to the best fashion designers at Portfolio’03 fashion show by Pearl Academy of Fashion
December 26 2003--‘Portfolio 03’ – the fashion show by Pearl Academy of Fashion, in association with Liberty, was held at Convention Center, Hotel Ashok. The graduating batch of B. A. (Hons.) in Fashion Design and Technology of the institute presented their creations. Hon’ble Union Minister for Textiles, Shri Syed Shahnawaz Hussain was present to boost up the moral of future designers and gave away awards to the winning designers. In an event with lots of glitterati, student presented innovative creations based on various unique themes.
Showcasing the creations were models like Lakshmi Rana, Tina Chatwal, Shruti Chauhan, Joey Mathews, Poonam Nath, Sunalika Nath, Diandra Soares, Bhavna Sharma, Fleur Xaviers, Tupur Chatterjee, Akansha Yadav, Cheryl Vaz, Shonal Rawat, Bhawna Singh etc. Amongst the male models were Gaurav Sachdeva, Nikhil Sabharwal, Bharat Singh, Prashant Ranyal and Pranaya Naithani.
The themes that were presented at the show were highly innovative. Depiction of women suppression through Shruti Lohiya’s 'Striya Charitra' to the Smriti Agarwal’s portrayal of a tree as life, presented a food of thought. An interesting use of khadi in an Indo-western way by Ritesh Gupta and Ruhina Sharma’s ‘Revival of Chikankari’ were worth watching. Arshia Jindal’s 'Plastic Or Life' depicts what exactly is required in present world to save our environment from pollution. A very novel idea was of Niharika Pandey who presented theme by her own name and called it journey of small town girl.
The Hon’ble Minister for Textiles, Shri Syed Shahnawaz Hussain highly appreciated the work of students and personally gave awards to most students. Best Collection Award, sponsored by Pearl Global Ltd., was won by Shweta Rohilla for the theme 'intricacies of MY mind'. The most Innovative Collection Award, Sponsored by Liberty Shoes Ltd., was won by Arshia Jindal for the theme 'plastic or life'. Mr. Adesh Gupta, CEO, Liberty Shoes Ltd. was personally present to give away the award. The Most Practical Collection Award, Sponsored by Richa and Co., was bagged by Divya Gandhi for the theme 'Kashmir: beyond the valley'. The Special Jury Award, sponsored by Walter Johnson, was conferred to Shruti Lohiya for the theme 'Triya Charitra'.
According to Mr. A. K. G. Nair, Executive Director, Pearl Academy of Fashion “I am very excited to see the collection of students. Portfolio’03 showcases some of the best works that have been done by graduating students of Pearl Academy of Fashion. Many of the students have displayed the potential to be at par with the best in the industry.”
Portfolio also depicted several unique examples of cultural convergence and unique expression through fashion. A student from North-east, Tsering Dolma presented collection on the theme ‘Attitude of Kimono in Sport Casual’ and Rupert Wanlambok Lynrah had a collection on ‘Tribal Revelation’ of north-east. Shruti Dudeja presented ‘Beyond the Obvious’, which was a collection of outfits evolving from kids under 3. ‘Flower Power’ theme by Parul Charaya was an attempt to bring back peace and love in the world through flowers. Isha Makkar’s collection ‘EIRENE’ meant and symbolized peace. ‘Say no to Shahtoosh’ by Chandni Gupta had an alternative to the endangered Shahtoosh.
Another notable aspect of the collections were practical ready to wear collections. Pranshu Srivastava’s ready to wear collection (named City Syndrome) was designed keeping in mind depression and related problems and had an element of acupressure in them. Ramandeep Kaur Bhasin brought out ‘A Tribute to Beautiful Woman’, Nimisha Gupta presented ‘Change – the enlightened way’ and Jasleen Kochar had the ‘Magic of Dance’ collection.
Portfolio'03 was attended by crème de la crème cutting across all the sections of the society, which included fashion designers, celebrities, alumni, senior government officials, industry stalwarts, media and international participants.
